Summer 2016 Portsmouth Multihull Show Special Edition Newsletter
April 2016 News Letter, Apollo Launch
‘Apollo’ was launched at the Multihull Centre in Millbrook, Cornwall on the 10th of March 2016. ‘Apollo’ is the second Dazcat 1495 launched from the Multihull Centre in Millbrook, Cornwall. This follows ‘Hissy Fit’ who was runner up in the recent European Yacht of the Year Awards 2016 and MOCRA national champion in 2015.
Using the latest in design and construction technology ‘Apollo’ has been built to an incredibly high specification using the best equipment on the market.
She has a 19m carbon mast built by Axxon and is supported by carbon rigging from Smartrigging in the Netherlands which all in all only weighs 160kg. Connected to this is a full set of all carbon North Sails which includes a fully battened square top main which runs on a Harken Y track system to create a low stack height.
Sail options include a hank on self tacking jib and overlapping Genoa.
Downwind it has a 120m sq furling code 0 or a 220sqm Spinnaker which will make ‘Apollo’ a very powerful machine as her all up sailing weight of 7.5 tonnes displacement.
Deck gear is from Harken, Antal, Lewmar and Spinlock and all halyards and reef lines are Dyneema for increased strength and wear and tear. The boat also has a top down code 0 furler set up on halyard lock.
The main structure build and fit out has been done by Multimarine whose reputation for creating robust, stiff, light weight, high quality bespoke crafts is well established having built some of the most innovative boats in the UK over the last two decades.
Each boat is especially tailored to the client’s requirements. ‘Apollo’ has a two cabin layout with on-suite head, showers and wet rooms.
The central galley features Ocean chef equipment including oven and sink and cookware which is of high quality and versatile along with microwave and large work top and storage areas.
The saloon has an electric table which converts to a spare double berth with pop-up TV, the entertainment system is positioned so it can be seen from the galley and saloon seating or in bed.
The lithium ion node based electrical system has been developed in-house with Mastervolt and also includes a 5kw generator for Air-con and battery charging.
A single berth sofa in the hull makes for a great sea berth or lounge area opposite the Navigation systems area and chart table. This is fully equipped with B&G navigation equipment giving tactical information when racing which is linked up to a Sat dome mounted on the aft beam for communications.
The boat has been hand finished with an Awlgrip paint system.
The boat will be based in Plymouth and is set to race in a series of RORC events this year.
Richard Wills has joined the design team at Dazcat. Current projects include the design, development and structuring of the Tomcat Project which is a modified D1495 designed for single handed wheel chair access and use.
The Tomcat is powered by sails only and should be a very interesting cruising catamaran designed to transport Tom and his crew around the world.
We have also started developing the D18m. This boat leads more towards the charter market offering something with a lot more performance then what is currently available while still keeping to the Dazcat principle of comfort under sail.
The Powercat range is getting a revamp and restructuring to create a new model range including a new high freeboard 525 which comes as a basic platform with a series of accommodation modules. These can be fitted out to the customer’s wishes from commercial to fishing or a leisure/camping version. The cuddy will be discontinued as a new folding canvas cuddy can be fitted to all the new boats for increased shelter making the boats more universal and lighter.
Similar ideas will be developed for the 695 and 10m Powercats with the aim to reduce production costs creating a very affordable platform that the client can then layout according to their needs.
With three boats in build our order book is full this year. We are looking at next year’s production so if you’re interested get in touch to reserve your build slot. Don’t hang around as they will go quickly with the current interest, due to all the amazing publicity we have had throughout Europe with our new boats.
At the Multihull Centre we have also been very busy with service work getting boats ready for the summer. This has been very popular and our service team have completed various works from re-conditioning race boats to fitting new systems like lithium batteries banks and electronic packages from both Raymarine and B&G.
The race fleet were the first launched this year to start the spring series in the Plymouth Sound. It has already been exciting watching ‘Hissy Fit’ and ‘Apollo’ match racing each other. Clearly everyone is just getting to grips with it all and a few hick-ups occurred but the initial view is they are very comparable which will make for great racing.
We wish you a happy summer sailing and don’t forget to drop in if you are passing Millbrook. It is a great spot with fantastic music, food, ciders and ales to sample and if you haven’t got a boat you can always book into the Insworke Mill Quay Marina and B&B.
Merry Christmas News 2015
Season’s greetings from our team at Multimarine & the Multihull Centre
Lot’s has happened in the last twelve months. Multimarine has now fully moved into new offices and production is ramping up with new orders for both the 1195 and 1495 Dazcat designs.
Our brokerage has sold more multihulls this year than before. So if you’re thinking of selling or buying a boat get in touch as there is a now 50% discount on brokerage fees making it only 3% if you bring your boat to the Multihull Centre. We can also help with tidying up your boat so it looks its best and sells quickly.
The yard is virtually full and we have lifted out over 100 catamarans this year with our new 75 tonne crane.
We are expanding our offer of servicing and maintaining boats under our new service manager and engineer Matt Theobald. Work taken on can be simple winterisation and servicing to full refits.
Some Multihull Centre clients have also used the new B&B at Insworke Mill Quay which is located nearby making it very convenient if you want to stay to do some work on the boat. We offer a 15% discount for Multihull Centre clients through the winter months, with a minimum stay of 2 nights.
We will be visiting Düsseldorf boat show in January 2016 to join the European Yacht of the Year awards, as our Dazcat 1495 was nominated for best multihull category which is very exciting. So watch this space.
The new Dazcat 1495 ‘Apollo’ is almost completes and will be launched in the spring. ‘Apollo’ will be racing ‘Hissy Fit’ next season in the Round Ireland race as well as other MOCRA and RORC events.
This should be very exciting as the Dazcat class expands.
Project Tomcat is a go!! In January the build of a new Dazcat 1495A (A for accessible) designed for a paraplegic sailor will commence.
This boat is designed for trade wind cruising and features various new innovative ideas making it very easy to control and access it from land or water.
Multimarine boat builder Martin Grout retired this year. Martin worked on many Dazcat projects over the years bringing his knowledge and humour to the team. Thank-you and we wish you all the best.
Derick Reynolds is also retiring next year. Derick has worked with the Dazcat team since we came to Millbrook 24 years ago.
I remember meeting him to chat about building plywood wing masts on our first 26 foot micro multihulls and I guess the rest is history. Derick has been pivotal in the creation of so many lovely multihulls here in Millbrook.
We will be on a recruitment drive in the New Year and are looking for people interested in a variety of areas like design, marketing and boat building. They need to be highly motivated and qualified and have a passion for excellence. So if you are interested in joining our innovative team get in touch.
So where does the time go and no wonder people are retiring as Dazcat is nearly 30 years old. We are hatching a plan to do something very special to celebrate it in two years’ time. This could include racing to the Caribbean as well as events here in the UK so let’s get together to see how many Dazcat’s fancy an adventure and a run to the sun.
With production now full there is only one booking spot for a build in 2016 with delivery in 2017 so if you’re thinking about it get it get signed up so you can come onto the big Dazcats adventure for the 30th anniversary.
If you have any good stories and photos of your Dazcat please send them in as we are creating a new section on our website called owners adventures.
We hope you all have a wonderful winter break, wishing you a Happy New Year and see you all soon.
The Multimarine and Multihull Centre team.
October 2015 News Letter
D1495 ‘Hissy Fit’ comes out the water at the Multihull Centre after a great season sailing and racing with a 1st for the Wolf Rock race, a 1st for the MOCRA Nationals and 4th in the Fastnet .
‘Hissy Fit’ also got nominated for ‘Best Multihull’ in the European Yacht of the Year 2016 Competition. We sailed her to La Rochelle for the European Yacht testing and to exhibit at the Grand Pavois boat show where she was received very well turning many heads and fast becoming the star of the show.
D1495 ‘Apollo’ is to launch in March 2016. This exciting new Dazcat has been finished beautifully inside and out. The ‘Apollo’ interior layout has been tailored to the clients’ requirements and features a twin en-suite, two cabin layout with the classic half down navigation station. This can be used as an office space. The saloon seating is U-shaped around an electric hydraulic table leg which drops the table down changing it into a day bed.
‘Apollo’ is being fitted with a 19.5m carbon mast from Axxon. All carbon 3Di black sail pack from North Sails and deck gear supplied by Harken, Karver and Spinlock. The systems are also advanced including a Lithium power pack and BUS electrical system along with B&G instrumentation.
‘Apollo’ will be based in Plymouth and her owner is scheduling both racing and cruising events for her next year including the Round Ireland race which we are supporting as a MOCRA class event.
If you interested in participating get in touch, so far we have 3 multihulls entered.
We have a range of multihulls and yachts for sale on brokerage. This year’s sales have been strong creating a need for new boats for the brokerage; so if you are thinking of selling your boat contact Mary to arrange a valuation and brokerage proposal. We will be listing your boat on all the main international brokerage websites, including Yachtworld and Yachtmarket, as well as our own websites and databases.
The new 75 tonnes Grove crane is already hard at work at the Multihull Centre, lifting a range of different cats into our 8.5 acre storage yard. These range from golden oldies to Lagoons, Fontaine Pajots, Outremers and Dazcats. All are welcome, monohull’s, cat’s and tri’s.
The Multihull Centre Service team is here to advise and look after you and your boat. Full winterisation and refit services are available making your life easier. We are also doing yacht optimisation where we check performance and how improvements can raise the value of your boat.
Multimarine has had a winter build project start date moved to next summer. We have one build slot available for 2016 launch. This is given on a first come first served basis. If you want to get going on your project call us now as we can offer a discounted rate to anyone filling it.

Summer 2015 News Letter: Dazcat 1495 Nominated European Boat of the Year 2016... Visit us at the La Rochelle Boat Show
Dazcat and Multimarine News Summer 2015
It always feels like we are rushed off our feet with the full range of yacht services that we offer at the Multihull Centre and this year is no different. We purchased the Multihull Centre over 2 years ago and since then have continuously grown the range of services including boat mooring, slipping, dry storage, workshops, servicing as well as the brokerage.
After 22 years of trading from the Ellis Boatyard our boat-building and design company Multimarine has now relocated to the Multihull Centre as we needed a much bigger yard to operate from.
A new office complex is now in position next to our workshops. Design, admin and sales departments are now close together and it is working out well by being closer to all the workshops again.
We will not be exhibiting at the Southampton Boat Show this year as we will be in France at the Grand Provost in La Rochelle (Stand Pontoon 6-8, if you are planning to visit). We are very much looking forward to this as there will be more Multihulls on show and fantastic French food and wine of course.
Since the launch of our new demonstrator boat Hissy Fit (Dazcat 1495) she has been winning races including the Wolf Rock race and the MOCRA nationals, showing her Dazcat pedigree. ‘Hissy Fit’ is all set for the Fastnet race in August. It will be very exciting to see how she does in the under 50 foot class.
The new Dazcat 1495 has been nominated for the European Boat of the Year award 2015, after last year’s nomination of the R550 it is proving the yard’s capabilities in both design and build.
The Second Dazcat 1495 is also near to completion. She has a tailored interior to the client’s specification and a taller race rig added, built by Axxon Composites. Combined with a cloud of carbon sails built by North Sails we certainly look forward to seeing her on the water sailing alongside Hissy Fit.
The 3rd order for a Dazcat 1495 is in its final stages of commission and the Dazcat design team are working also on creating a customised layout for a wheel chair accessible version for another client who wants to go blue water cruising.
At the Multihull Centre we are currently negotiating the purchase a new 75 tonne crane which will allow us to offer our services to much larger vessels.
This year our service work sector has increased and with all facilities on one site it will allows us to grow the service work side considerably.
Our classic boatyard at Insworke Mill Quay has also been very busy this summer. There are a couple of berths available for the winter as a few of our clients are sailing south.
The Insworke Mill B&B has now been open for 10 weeks and has been received exceptionally well by our guests who have come from all over the world so if you fancy a weekend escape and love boats it’s a great spot to stay.
We look forward to seeing you at the La Rochelle Boat Show this year. Have a good summer sailing season.
All the best

Launch of the Dazcat 1495, Hissy Fit.
On April the 20th we launched our new flag ship, the Dazcat 1495 “Hissy Fit” which replaces “Drama Queen” as our demonstrator owned by Simon and Tracey Baker.
”Hissy fit” will be available to demonstrate the Dazcat 1495 and our design philosophy, encompassing strength, comfort, lightness, speed and ease of use, creating exceptional offshore performance whether you want to race or cruise your catamaran.
Designed for ocean sailing the Dazcat 1495 is a real good looking boat and we will be vigorously testing her starting with the Plymouth Falmouth Fowey triangle race run by the Royal Western Yacht club in Plymouth followed by the Fastnet race this year which will give her a proper sea trial.
The second boat is due later this year which will add to the Plymouth multihull fleet which is growing rapidly as more MOCRA racing and cruising rallies are being planned. This includes the Multihull Centre’s fun weekend, BBQ, gathering and raft up in Cawsands which is open to all cruising and racing multihulls. Our challenge is to get as many multihulls rafted up in one place to make a poster shot so come and join the fun. Date will be announced later.
Spring News Letter: MCL Moves to Multihull Centre, Dazcat & Powercat developing new designs, 2015...
End of an era
This year we are consolidating Multimarine operations into one site at the Multihull Centre in Millbrook.
This has been planned for the last 2 years, having now developed the site since purchasing the Multihull Centre. We have added new infrastructure that was needed for upgrading our manufacturing, development and yacht production facilities which will increase efficiency of production and allows us to build much larger vessels.
After 22 years of building boats at the Ellis boatyard we are sad to move out.
We were drawn to Millbrook some 22 years ago and we would like to give a special thanks to Clive Ellis who rented us his small boatyard and workshops that gave what was then a small group of keen young men and women the opportunity to be creative and develop and build on their ideas.
22 years is a long time but the saying ”time flies when you’re having fun” and the love of sailing has inspired us to design, build and create a variety of different craft over this time. These have included vessels that were designed especially for disabled sailors taking them onto the oceans which has inspired people and brought freedom of adventure for many. A range of both Dazcats and Powercats have been built and full design development builds for other mainstream companies, pleasing many customers, winning races and travelling the world.
We feel very lucky as we have been blessed with working with some fantastic clients over the years, some of them often with an engineering background which has brought more ideas to the table, inspiring innovations and making the projects very exciting which has created a very special bond between us all.
We have won many races and received various prestigious awards for what we created. The jobs have got bigger and more technical and we have embraced those challenges carving out a reputation that is now acknowledged worldwide. Our design and boatbuilding crew have complemented our challenging nature where we seek to create the best boat we can thus advancing the design technology and processing techniques of boatbuilding in the UK.
Moving site will consolidate our manufacturing and service company into one site at the Multihull Centre and gain further benefits’ and allows us to offer more to our clients.
Now we have the space to grow a wider range of services related to design product development and manufacturing within the marine industry in Cornwall which we are proud to be part of.
Looking to the future: we will continue to develop the Dazcat range of catamarans with the current range of 10m, 12m and 15m length which suits everything from coastal, offshore to ocean sailing. Our business model allows us to tailor each vessel to the client’s personal desire.
While we have been so busy with work, Powercat has taken a back seat, but once fully moved we hope to develop a new design to replace the 525 which was exceptionally successful. Used by Bryher boatyards boat share business in the Isles of Scilly it is the best offshore small boat you can get with over 110 boats built. Our ideas are for a new backpacker layout so you can overnight aboard allowing the exploration of estuaries and coastlines not accessible to larger boats. Features will include more freeboard and range. Built-in tanks and flexible interior design with cooker, head and double bunk and a full flexible enclosure which can be used as a cuddy as well.
We also have an eco-cruiser on the design board for blue water adventure. This new 18m design has some very nice interior features and will have a range in excess of 1500 miles.
Future plans also include a new Dazcat 1295 design with wave piercing bows to complement the range of existing Dazcats.
The overall growth in multihull sales means that the multihull is no longer the underdog but the preferred choice for not only the commercial world and charter companies but individuals that want the benefits multihulls offer. Taking them where they want to go whether it’s a race, coastal exploration or a cruise around the world the multihull is now the most popular new boat choice to take you there.
If you would like further information on our range of catamarans or services simply drop us an e-mail and see what we can do for you.
Insworke quay Foss boatyard winter news 2014
Welcome to Insworke quay Foss boatyard winter news
Here we are coming up to Christmas, the winter series at an end with Matt Baker and crew having won on Wombat. Most of our clients have their boats safely ashore at the Multihull Centre and the job lists have already started for our refit and service teams. Much of their time is already booked up - if you need their help, don’t leave it to the last minute.
There are a few new listings on the Multihull Centre brokerage, including Dazcat 10m Belladonna. It’s not often we have Dazcats for sale second hand, so if you’re interested don’t hang around as the opportunity to own such a great performing little boat doesn’t come up often. This particular sporty little cat had an all new rig and sails this year.
If you are thinking of living aboard we have a range of used Lagoon and other cruising catamarans too, which will tick that box. Or if you fancy coming racing with us in the various MOCRA events, we have a selection of sporty trimarans including both Farrier and Dragonfly models. Visit www.multihullcentre.co.uk to see what’s new.
On-site boat builders Multimarine are busy this winter with the build of two new Dazcat 1495s. Additional orders for both our new D995 and D1195 are on the horizon for construction next summer. At the moment we have a four month lead time on construction, so again, if you are planning a project it’s time to start talking to us and booking a build slot for next year.
One new design on the drawing board is a new 14m Dazcat trimaran, something Daz has been researching for some time now. He is taking a new look at how cruising at speed, with simplicity of control systems as well as comfort on board.
At Insworke Mill the quay is full for the winter, home to a beautiful fleet of locally built classic boats, including the Grayhound, in for a refit after her 22,000 mile Atlantic chartering circuit this year. The Mill itself is in the final stages of fit out and will be available to rent next summer, offering unique holiday accommodation. It will sleep 6-8 people with exceptional views across the lake to woods and hills. Perfect for special family events - and you can bring your own boat too if you want.
